Age: 16
Birthday & Astrology Sign: December 12, 3984 | Sagittarius
Arcana: Reversed World
World Snapshot:
On December 12, 2012, the world ended.
It wasn't with the bang that everyone was expecting, however; the global economy collapsed, and money was rendered useless literally overnight. World leaders struggled to pull everything back together, however they were far outnumbered by a panicked populace. Businesses closed as looting took over, power plants were shut down; some people tried to help others, offering food and a warm place to sleep, but there were far more that took advantage of the situation. People began fighting over food and what technology that could work independently from a power source, and as the decades passed, once mighty nations fell into chaos.
After the collapse came the wars; once government was shown to be a useless entity, many nations toppled their leaders, replacing them with people who could "do better". It didn't work, with some going so far as to raze entire crop fields of farmers that refused to cooperate with their orders. As time went on, food became more valuable than anything else, and whole battles were fought over even the smallest bit of fertile soil. Weapons were developed, some of which could actually destroy plant life in order to get an enemy force to surrender, and in some areas the fighting lasted for so long, that some people could not even remember what they were fighting for. Eventually, as decades turned into centuries, the human race started to slowly dwindle as they destroyed themselves...
...and then things woke up; the stuff of nightmares and legends. The fighting had become so intense that it awakened things long buried in the earth; dragons, huge wolves, and so many other monsters. Humans fighting each other eventually stopped as they turned their focus outward, essentially ending the wars that came to be collectively known as The Great Collapse.
With humanity heading toward extinction, and the monsters and their own creations making it worse, what few peoples were left banded together and created the Domes: massive enclosed structures that could keep the world outside out, while allowing humanity to florish within. In order to prevent anymore fighting amongst themselves, everyone was forced to follow a strict lifestyle. Everyone had to have the same clothes, the same hair cut, the same number of family members, the same allotment of food, ect. Absolutely no mention of what happened during the wars was to ever be made, and once a member of the Dome, no one was ever allowed to leave unless they were exiled for breaking the rules.
And thus, humanity has survived that much longer.
Backstory:
On December 12, 3984, in what had been New Jersey at some point in time, the Raritan Dome exploded. Those that survived the blast began the long trek to Warren Dome, with newborn Rune being held onto by her grandmother. At Warren Dome, however, they were not allowing everyone to seek shelter inside; only those that were proven to be disease free would be permitted to make the Dome their new home. Rune was allowed in easily, however her grandmother did not even bother to be scanned, knowing full well that she would not pass. Very few others were allowed into the Dome, before the death bringing shadow of a Creoth approached, and the Dome was sealed off. Rune is eventually placed with Lucas Calstead and his father, who lost two members of their family before the Dome was closed.
Sixteen years later, Rune is That Kid in high school; the one that everyone avoids because they're so different from everyone else (even in a world where everyone is the same). Her lack of respect for her teachers -- especially her history teacher -- gets her sent to detention often, and her inquisitiveness and need to research the Great Collapse frustrates the adults in her life, who try to keep her quiet before she does something that gets them all in trouble. Lucas and his father try to get her to stop as well, though they are far less strict about it; the father is actually more impressed that she wants to know the truth of the world, considering how they live, than anything else.
Unfortunately, Rune's constant questioning hasn't gone unnoticed, and when a group of bandits from the outside manage to infiltrate the Dome, she's blamed for allowing them access, if only because she was close to one of the access hatches at the time. Refusing to let her take all the blame, Lucas stands up for her... only to end up with both of them exiled from the Dome. Left with only a small back of food and the clothes on their backs, the two of them tried to find a way through the wastes to shelter, but with no real knowledge of how to survive outside, it wasn't very long before the two of them succumbed to the elements.
Of course their story was not going to end there; the two of them were rescued by a man named Gabriel, a lanky middle-aged hermit that had been willingly exiled from his own Dome many years ago. He nursed them back to health, teaching them about how to survive out in the wastes, and how people lived outside of the Domes. Before setting them on their way, he gave them weapons that they could defend themselves with -- a sword for Lucas, and a gun for Rune.
The two of them set out into the world, stopping by the first establishment they came to in order to restock and get their bearings. It's there Rune picks up her second gun, and during the course of their time at the small town, teaches herself how to dual wield. They also find out about the raiders that had attacked the Warren Dome; they were associated with a group of cultists that were... well, more than a little crazy, and many people don't take them and their claims of reforming the world seriously. Most importantly, however, was that they were responsible for the destruction of Raritan Dome, something that both Lucas and Rune want to find out more about.
They set out once they feel they're comfortable with going, intent on following the trail of the bandits. Unfortunately, they do find the bandits... or rather, the bandits find them. It seems like they're about to get killed, when an angeling (humans that eventually evolved wings; a subspecies of Mutations) comes to their rescue. She was from the town they stayed at, and her name is Chrystal; she followed them because she was worried about what they hope to accomplish by trying to find the cultists, as she fears they may learn far more about themselves and the world than they could handle. She volunteers to come with them, as she can get into places that normal humans can't.
It takes some time for them to find the bandits and their base, but the three of them manage to sneak in to sabotage the old military installation. While successful in blowing up the base, Rune is captured by Gabriel, who is revealed to have been working with the cultists. Lucas and Chrystal manage to nab Gabriel, but not before Rune was already handed over to the cultists. After Lucas rearranges Gabriel's face for betraying Rune like that, they force him to lead them to where they've taken her.
Rune, meanwhile, is brought before the cultists, where she does indeed find out about herself and the Dome she came from, as Chrystal feared. The cult had started in the Raritan Dome, with the intentions of finding a way to reset the world to a time before the Great Collapse, so people could do it right this time. Rune's parents volunteered their unborn child for an experiment in altering the course of fate. By directly injecting the fetus with engineered phoenix DNA mixed with the destructive properties of the Creoth beasts, they believed the result would lead to a human with enough energy that, when combined with the proper machinery, would bring about the results they wanted -- the break down of the current world, and the resurrection of a new world. The Dome government found out about their plan however, and the resulting fighting led to the end of the dome. Rune was taken by her grandmother, who did not approve of the experiments, and they lost her in the chaos.
Rune doesn't want to believe any of that; she never knew her parents, but she wanted to believe they were kind people, not the kind that would just decide their child's fate before she was even born. But the cult leader breaks her down, saying that her existing was just to fulfill the greater good; if she ever used her ability to reset the world, the phoenix energy inside of her would be dried up, and she would die. It didn't matter, though, right? Rune always wanted to learn more about the real world, and when she saw it, wanted to see it prosper again. What did it matter if she had to lose her life to make it a reality?
Just as she's about to agree to fulfill the cult's desires, Lucas and Chrystal burst into the room, dragging Gabriel along behind them. They fight to get Rune back, with bandits filling in to protect the cultists, and the resulting battle leads to Lucas finding out his brother, whom he thought was lost back when they moved to Warren Dome, was leading the bandits. It's not a battle they can really win, so the group manages to escape, dragging Rune along with them.
The four of them don't stop running until they're far away from the cultist's compound, Rune practically sobbing the whole time. She explains to them what she learned, and what she was supposed to do with her life. Gabriel notes that yes, if that was her purpose, it was something she should fulfill (Lucas promptly punches him for it). Rune says she's not entirely sure what to do; she doesn't want to be selfish and prioritize her life over everyone else, but she doesn't want everyone else to suffer too, even the people back in the Dome that hated her. Lucas talks her into not thinking about it right now, and to focus on getting some place safe, where the cultists couldn't get to her. Gabriel tails along, saying that it's imperative for someone of his standing to look out for something as important as Rune. Lucas threatens to leave him there in pieces, but Rune stops him, telling him that he may need to take her back depending on what she decides.
The group travels for awhile together, finally coming to a small mountain range -- what used to be the Appalachian Trail. They scale it for awhile, coming down into a small valley... where they can see some grass and small trees growing on their own in fertile soil, something none of them have seen in their lifetimes. They come to a stop there, and Rune collapses into the grass for a long time before she says anything to the others. She's decided that even though she has this ability, she's not going to use it. It's obvious that there is still some hope for the world, and she's going to make sure that the world they have now flourishes again, even if all she can do is set the building blocks for future generations.
Canon Standing: After finding the fertile valley. Rune's story is to be split between two games, with the first game -- Forbidden Frontier -- ending here. At this time, only the main party and the general plot line is completely finished; finer details like sidequests and secondary character names will come later, but are not necessary for the purposes of this application.
Personality:
If Rune could be summed up in one word, it would be "hyper". She is the kind of person that has limitless energy; she is the first to wake up in the morning, run around all day, and the last to go to bed at night. If she could, she would travel from one end of the former United States to the other, and take account of everything that she finds in between. Unfortunately, this also leads to her being very impatient, and she can easily flick back and forth from one task to another without any consideration as to how annoying she can be to someone else. Despite her fickleness, she doesn't leave anything unfinished, and once she sets her mind to something it gets finished... and it will be finished quickly if it manages to hold her interest.
Rune is naturally inquisitive; she can't just ask "why" -- though that and "wow" are her two favorite words -- she needs to know "where," "when," and "what" as well. She doesn't settle with a simple, "It's none of your concern," or any other kind of non-answers; if she wants to know something, she will literally not settle for any kind of blow off. This gets her into trouble amongst the highly uniform Domes, but she often blows it off, as finding the truth is more important to her than people's opinions of her. She is also fascinated with the Great Collapse, and tries to learn more about it, even if the details are sketchy -- this is also the source of a lot of trouble for her, and responsible for 90% of the detentions she recieved in school.
When it comes to friendships, Rune is literally the best friend you could ever hope for. Despite her hyperness and propensity for trouble, she is excessively loyal and sticks by her friends, even if they do something stupid. She would do absolutely anything for her friends, especially if that friend is Lucas. The two of them grew up together, and she looks up to him like a brother and a mother all rolled into one. She feels closest to him, and the feeling is mutual considering how often he sticks up for her. However, she is also used to playing the role of the high school outcast, so she doesn't really go out of her way to initiate a conversation with someone -- it would take someone approaching her in a friendly manner, before she would open up. This may be overridden depending on how excited she is, though; for example, with first appearing in Hinoto-Ri, she'll be so excited to be someplace so unique and different from what she's used to that she'd probably start randomly talking to anyone that will listen to her.
Over her time out in the wastes of the old world, Rune has become a bit of a survivor. It took her some time, but she's learned how to take care of herself and how to fight. She's not entirely thrilled with it, but if she has to kill, she has to kill -- she'll defend herself against monsters, but she'll never kill a harmless animal, even just to eat. After seeing real animals for the first time and how "cute" they were, she is even reluctant to eat any kind of natural meat.
It's really hard to get her to be upset or annoyed about anything, but mention of experiments or harming others really pings her hard, especially with knowing what she's capable of. She'll get short and snippy with anyone that just talks casually about it, and it's probably the only topic she's reluctant to find out anything about. Also, threatening people that she calls friends is a good way to piss her off, and she will often respond with a punch or a "kick to the pants". Other than that, however, she isn't really violent, and is more likely to pounce a person with a hug than a kick.
Canon Powers:
Rune's guns have a special ability to pull in particles from the air around her, granting the projectile released from inside different elemental properties. She can also turn this option off, allowing for normal projectile to be shot. The guns do not require ammunition, and instead run off a battery pack that needs to be recharged via solar energy if completely emptied (for example, if she were to use Gun Show, which essentially equates to her version of a limit break, she would need to recharge them).
Bullet Time
* Flame Bullet (Fire) - Shoots a bullet with flame properties.
* Ice Shot (Ice) - Shoots a bullet with ice properties.
* Thunder Shot (Elec) - Shoots a bullet with thunder properties.
* Storm Bullet (Wind) - Shoots a bullet with air properties.
* Scatter Shot (Phys) - Shoots multiple bullets over a wide area.
* Plasma Shot (Light) - Shoots a large blast of energy.
* Poison Shot (Phys) - Chance of inflicting poison on a target.
* Gun Show (Phys) - Unloads what is essentially an entire clip on a single enemy.
Also, she has the ability to reset time (Mind), but she cannot use this ability on her own. Special equipment is needed to draw this power out of her; otherwise it would be completely inaccessible.
